Long time, no typing! I hope y'all are doing great. I'm doing not too bad myself. I'm writing this journal, because I wanted your input/feedback on some stuff I've been thinking about lately. I'll need your honest opinions.
First of all, I've been on dA for seven years now and I think I've been improving on my photography skills ever since. I don't consider myself good enough to call myself a "landscape photographer" for instance, or a "nature photographer", but I feel more like it than when I just started taking pictures. I'm not surprised if I spend around 20 hours of my free time doing photography and post processing and posting the pictures online per week. I like doing this so much, that I don't really notice the amount of time and effort I put in, which is something special I think.
Secondly, financially, I'm doing OK at the moment, but I'd like to earn a little bit extra so that I can reward myself for the things that aren't going as smoothly as my photography (there are a few things that trouble me and cost a lot of my time and energy, I have been working on that for some time now though). So I have been toying with the idea of opening a webshop (or webshops) where I can sell some of my pictures as artwork on canvas or just on high quality paper. As you might know, I already joined Society6 (society6.com/dashtropie) and I can also be found on Flickr and 500px. This last website offers to sell my photos as prints, just as dA is able to. I also created a webshop account on the Dutch website Werkaandemuur.nl where I can upload my photos and they (the website owners) do the printing and shipping.
So, I have been wondering what the best way to sell some of my pictures as prints is. My guess is to offer my pictures as prints on as many websites as possible and make sure that I'm found on google via good tags. Does anyone have any experience doing this and how did you manage to sell prints, if you did? And does anyone have any experience selling their artwork via dA? How do the prints come out and is it a safe way to offer your artwork as prints? Does anyone know of any other website that offers the opportunity to create your own webshop?
Lastly, I'm wondering if this business of selling my photos as prints is going to interfere with the way I experience spending time on my greatest hobby. Will it effect the way I view my photos and will I enjoy doing it as much as I used to? Because there might be some pressure now that I'm actually willing to sell some of my photos as prints and I'm not too good at dealing with pressure. Does anyone who made this decision of selling your artwork experience any of this in some way?
I think that I'm mostly excited about trying to sell prints of my photos, but this voice is nagging in the back of my head saying that I'm not thinking this through. So, that's why I'm dumping this on your screens. Help, please?
