Carnage

Me and my bf encountered this tree on our walk in the forest. It was kind of a sad sight and a tat overwhelming. It was literally in our path, so we had to step over it to be able to follow our own way, but it made us wonder what caused such carnage. My first thought was a lightning strike, as it is actually ripped apart, but other than that I've no idea.
